Abstract
Smart Device Association from Shared Audio Context (B)Status: Abgeschlossen
Background
The Internet of Things and Web of Things projects are about interconnecting everyday objects and giving them the ability to communicate and cooperate within smart environments. To associate devices in a meaningful way, it is often helpful to know their location, and, in particular, to ascertain whether devices are located in the same room or not. However, indoor localization systems are often either hard to set up and to train or not accurate enough to be used for this application.
Objectives
The goal of this project is to build an association system for smart devices that is based on a shared audio context: In its simplest form, two devices take ambient noise samples, analyze these for common patterns, and use this information to find out whether they are located in the same room or not. Previous work already shows that this is in principle feasible because ambient noise in different rooms is sufficiently different - at least in an office environment.
Requirements
- Programming skills (mainly Java/Android)
- Basic knowledge of distributed systems
If you are interested in the project and would like to know more about it, drop me a line. Also, while the general direction of the project is already fixed, we can absolutely adapt to account for your interests.
